Conscience

Conscience is a topic that occasionally crosses my mind, particularly when I feel guilty about something. Although discussions about conscience often revolve around feelings of guilt, the concept encompasses a broader spectrum of moral understanding.

Conscience is partly innate but also a learned behaviour. The sense of values and having the ability to decide what is right or wrong, or to feel guilty...and that's exactly where the guilty conscience comes in. Things you should have done or not done, things you should have said or not said….

Observing the presence of hate and rudeness, especially online, one might question whether recent generations have been educated about values, ethics, and the distinction between right and wrong. Innate emotions, such as guilt, appears to be relegated to the posterior regions of the cerebral cortex.

Conscience is closely connected to our capacity for empathy, that is, the ability to care for and comprehend another person's feelings or circumstances without imposing our own emotions and viewpoints. However, it appears that this empathetic capacity is often subdued in many individuals today.

When considering positive aspects, the term "conscientious" often comes to mind, signifying reliability and loyalty, neatness, diligence, and enthusiasm. However, it seems to describe a character trait rather than a direct personality attribute.

A bad conscience is never fun to have, but it is at least proof that you have one....
