A Merry Minimized Xmas!

A classic, traditional Christmas with all the accessories is the target image most have but few manage to accomplish. Expectations create stress, and the planning and work effort required can more or less break your spirit..

If you have health problems, you have to modify both expectations, preparation and execution based on what you can do.

A minimalist Christmas is also a Christmas worth celebrating, and my Christmas has become that kind of tradition. In recent years I have made the most of the most important elements that make the special Christmas atmosphere come true for me. It was difficult to refrain from some things at the beginning, but the longer the time went by and the worse my health became, I realized that it's not actually a clinically clean home, an abundance of decorations and Christmas food, a glimmering christmas tree or gadgets and gifts that create that Christmas feeling, it's the simple things like the smell of stearin, christmas apples and hyacinth, soft Christmas music in the background while enjoying a ham sandwich and a cup of hot chocolate, tea or a glass of mulled wine at the wood burning stove or by the TV.

This minimized alternative only works when you don't celebrate with family, which is common if you lack energy for social activities because of health. It may feel sad and disappointing before you come to an agreement with your situation, but the day you accept that life has changed forever, it's much easier to really enjoy what you still can do. I really don't mean that you should give up or stop fighting for a healthier life, but to relate in the moment, take the day as it comes and enjoy small wins gives a much needed mental relief and a self confidence boost.

Whether you choose to celebrate the holidays alone or with others, are healthy or have health problems, you should avoid the Christmas stress. Lower your expectations and erase at least half the things on the to-do list. Be honest and prioritize only what is absolutely important to you. Family, children, relatives, friends, partners or you, yourself would much rather like to celebrate Christmas with a happy and harmonious version of you than an exhausted and annoyed one.
