Heat wave & Lemon water

Sweden has suffered from a prolonged heat wave which has induced an extreme drought and caused great forest fires all across the country. It has become so unmanageable that we have become forced to get help from the EU and several countries have sent their much appreciated help. Luckily we have been pretty spared from bigger fires in the county where I live, at least so far.

Even if it’s too early to blame the climate changes for the heat waves that has occurred all over Europe and elsewhere, I firmly believe that it’s global warming and the temperature increase that is beginning to show what mankind has to prepare for.

But speaking of heat, I’ve noticed that I don’t handle this kind of weather that well. It's not just the common problems like sweating, thirst and not being able to sleep, but I'm also having severe head aches, and an increased problem to focus on, or remember things. My glucose levels are running wild and the swelling and pains in my legs and feet is at its worse. It's a struggle but I'm so glad there's an excellent AC-system at work so I can at least manage my work with a fairly clear and working head.

When you're diabetic it’s important to get fluid regularly in this kind of heat, and I’ve started to drink a lot of lemon water, with a lot of ice of course. It's easy to make, tastes delicious and has a lot of health benefits.

I found the facts below on a swedish site, the only difference from what I’m drinking at the moment is the temperature, but I will be drinking it tepid during autumn and winter when it’s nice to have a healthy warm drink on chilly evenings or mornings

10 reasons to start the day with lemon water

Beginning the day with tepid lemon water is something more and more people do. But why?
Well, there are many reasons to drink lemon water every day. Here are some of them:

1. It balances the pH in the body

Lemon, despite its sour flavor, is an extremely basic - so-called alkaline food. Lemon helps neutralize the pH in your body, which in turn counteracts diseases, including cancer.
The Nobel Prize in 1931 was also distributed to the discovery that cancer cells endure in an acidified environment but can not survive in a basic environment.

2. Strengthens the immune system

Lemon contains a lot of vitamin C, which counteracts colds and strengthens the immune system. Vitamin C in lemons has anti-inflammatory effects and also improves the absorption of iron in the body, which also plays an important role in the immune system.

3. Reduces inflammation

Drinking lemon water helps to balance the acidity of the body, including uric acid in the joints, which is one of the main causes of pain and inflammation.

4. Provides healthier breath

Lemon is known to give fresher breath, partly to provide fresher oral health and to relieve gum inflammation. But please wait to brush your teeth after drinking your lemon water, as it may lead to the erosion of the tooth enamel.

5. Cleans your body

Lemon helps to expel toxins, thus getting poison out of your body. This, among other things, because lemons are diuretic, which makes you get rid of poisons faster than usual. Citric acid also stimulates the liver's detoxification process.

6. Can counteract sweet cravings - and help weight loss

Lemons can, because of their high pectin content, that is, fibers, be a weight loss aid, as this, among other things, counteracts sweetness. Studies have also shown that people who eat a more basic diet lose weight faster than others.

7. Improves and cleans your skin

Some experience how they suddenly get rid of problems like eczema or acne. Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, contribute to reducing wrinkles and rashes. C-vitamin alkaline properties can eliminate certain types of bacteria that are known causes of problem. You get a cleaner and finer skin, partly because of the lemon's cleansing effect.

8. Cheers up the mood

The scent of lemon is said to be a "mood enhancer" and also have energy-generating properties. Vitamin C is also said to be good for recovery at different degrees of stress.

9. Promotes healing

Lemons are stuffed with vitamin C which, among other things, promotes wound healing. Vitamin C is also said to help the body recover faster from injuries.

10. Facilitates digestion

Because of its poison-cleansing effect, lemon juice may also trigger the liver to produce bile, an acid needed for the digestive process. Lemons also contain vitamins and minerals that are said to reduce the number of toxins in the gastrointestinal tract. Lemon also relieves indigestion such as gases and heartburn.

Here's how to make your lemon water:

1. Boil water, don't use tepid water from the tap.

2. Squeeze half a lemon in a cup or glass.

3. Pour half of cold water and half of hot water in the glass. The water should be lukewarm.

4. If you wish, you can also have ingredients like organic turmeric, cinnamon, honey, ginger, chiliflakes and / or wheat grass.

Enjoy!
