Managing a RA flare-up

If you have experienced RA flare-ups, you know that these not only consists of pain but also of increased stiffness and great fatigue. Here are some simple tips that may help to ease the symptoms.

Hot or cold therapy for inflamed and achy joints
Use dry heat, like a heating pad or heat patch, or wet heat like a hot, wet towel or a warm bath.

Cold therapy could be as helpful as warm, you have to experiment a little to see what kind is best for you.
Home made cold packs:
Use a plastic bag with ice or a sock filled with rice which has been kept in the freezer a while. It gets as cold as ice but doesn't melt when used. The bag or sock should be wrapped in a towel or a piece of cloth before applying it to the painful area to protect the skin from ice burn.

You can also use a frozen towel. Place a folded, damp towel in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for ten to twenty minutes. Then take the towel out of the bag and place it on the affected area.

Wraps and stretching:
Wrap the affected joints for added support and immobility.
Gentle stretches, increase your range of motion as the flare eases.

Fighting fatigue
Rest but not too much, balance it with light activity and stretching.
Ask your employe for flexible work hours or ability to work from home, be sure to inform about your diagnosis and your ability to do your job during flare-ups provided that these choices are available.

Minimize your efforts: always have frozen meals available, a rolling cart is handy for reaching frequently needed items, always sit when brushing your teeth or hair,  wear comfortable clothing - easy to get on and off.
